Choosing a wood finish from a product photo is harder than it looks, and it is a more common source of buyer's remorse than people expect. What reads as a warm honey oak on one screen can look pale and washed out on another, and that is before your own room's lighting gets involved.
The good news is that choosing confidently does not require a showroom visit. It simply requires seeing the real thing, in your own space, before you commit. Whether you are investing in a custom dining table or selecting the perfect solid wood dresser, finding the right tone is essential.
Want to see our premium materials in person? Order your physical wood swatches today and make your choice with complete confidence.
That is why we send real material samples directly to your home before you finalize an order. When you request swatches for the finishes you are considering, we mail you physical samples — actual solid wood, not printed color chips.
This allows you to see the true grain, tone, and texture with your own eyes, under your own lighting, before making a decision on custom furniture that will live in your home for years.
Why Screens Don't Show True Wood Color
A handful of factors distort how wood finishes appear online, and most of them have nothing to do with the solid wood furniture itself:
- Monitor Calibration: Display settings vary significantly between devices. The exact same image can look warmer on your phone and cooler on your laptop.
- Studio Lighting: Camera settings and lighting conditions during a product photoshoot shift the apparent tone of a finish, sometimes dramatically.
- Natural Variation: Because real wood is a natural, organic material, no two boards are identical. A single photo can capture one board's specific grain and color, but it can never fully represent the natural variation you will see in the piece that actually arrives at your door.
Once your samples arrive, do not rush the process. Here is how interior designers test materials:
Resist the urge to judge the samples under a single light source. Look at each swatch in the bright morning daylight and again under warm evening lamp light — the warmth of the wood can shift noticeably between the two.
Hold the sample directly next to your existing flooring, window trim, or other living room furniture sets. You want to check whether the undertones feel cohesive or if they clash.
It is worth knowing that pieces do not need to match exactly to work well together in a room. They just need to "go." This usually means keeping warm-toned woods together and cool-toned woods together, rather than mixing the two without a deliberate plan.
Not sure where to start? Here is a breakdown of our three signature materials:
None of the three is objectively "better." The right choice depends entirely on the mood you are going for and the tones already present in your space.
